The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the Junior Engineer Examination 2026 notification on September 2, 2026. The recruitment covers Junior Engineer posts in various Central Government organisations and also includes the Scientific Assistant post in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Commission has notified 1,748 tentative vacancies. Applications are being accepted from September 2 to September 22, 2026, while Paper-I is tentatively scheduled for October/November and Paper-II for December 2026.
The important point about this recruitment is that 1,748 is only the tentative total. SSC has not included the numerical department-wise and category-wise vacancy breakup in the notification. The Commission says those figures will be published separately under its Tentative Vacancy section. Therefore, vacancy tables circulating from previous SSC JE cycles should not be treated as the 2026 breakup.
Candidates looking for other government jobs for engineers can also check current engineering recruitment opportunities across Central Government organisations and PSUs.

SSC JE 2026 Vacancy: 1,748 Posts, Detailed Breakup Yet to Be Released
SSC has currently reported 1,748 tentative vacancies for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026. However, the notification does not provide a numerical table showing how these vacancies are divided among Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Telecom or individual departments.
SSC has specifically stated that the post-wise and category-wise vacancy figures will be made available separately on its website. It also does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies; candidates seeking such information have to approach the concerned user department.
What is confirmed at this stage?
- Total tentative vacancies: 1,748
- Detailed post-wise breakup: To be released separately
- Category-wise breakup: To be released separately
- State-wise/zone-wise breakup: SSC does not collect it
This distinction matters because the 1,748 figure should not be converted into an assumed Civil/Mechanical/Electrical vacancy split until SSC publishes the relevant vacancy document.
Organisations and Posts Covered Under SSC JE 2026
Although the numerical vacancy distribution is pending, the notification identifies the organisations and posts covered by the examination.
| Organisation | Post/Discipline |

The organisation/post list comes from the essential-qualification table in the SSC notification.

SSC JE 2026 Eligibility: Qualification Depends on the Post
There is no single educational qualification that applies to every post under SSC JE 2026.
This is one of the areas candidates need to check carefully because some posts accept a degree or diploma, while others specify only a diploma, and some diploma-based routes also require professional experience.
Major qualification requirements

|---|---|
| BRO JE Civil | Degree in Civil Engineering or 3-year Diploma + 2 years’ experience in planning/execution/maintenance of Civil Engineering works |
| BRO JE Electrical & Mechanical | Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or 3-year Diploma in Electrical/Automobile/Mechanical Engineering + 2 years’ relevant experience |

The exact eligibility should always be checked against the particular post because the requirements are not uniform across the recruitment.
Those comparing SSC JE with other technical recruitment can also refer to our list of technical government jobs in 2026.
Experience must be post-qualification
Where experience is prescribed, SSC has made an important clarification: the required experience must have been obtained after acquiring the requisite educational qualification.
Internship, training or research experience gained while pursuing the qualifying course will not be counted as the prescribed experience.
Candidates called for Document Verification will also have to produce the relevant educational and experience certificates. If the claimed qualification or experience cannot be supported by documents, the candidature can be cancelled.
SSC JE 2026 Age Limit
The crucial date for determining age is August 1, 2026. The upper age limit differs according to the post.
For posts with an upper age limit of 30 years. The candidate must have been born between: August 2, 1996 and August 1, 2008
For posts with an upper age limit of 32 years. The candidate must have been born between: August 2, 1994 and August 1, 2008
The CPWD and Directorate General of Lighthouses & Lightships posts, among others, carry a 32-year upper age limit, while several other posts have a 30-year limit.
Age Relaxation
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC/ST | 5 years |
| OBC | 3 years |
| PwBD – UR/EWS | 10 years |
| PwBD – OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD – SC/ST | 15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years after deduction of military service |
| Defence personnel disabled during hostilities – UR/EWS/OBC | 3 years |
| Defence personnel disabled during hostilities – SC/ST | 8 years |
The date of birth entered in the application must match the candidate’s Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate. SSC states that a mismatch can lead to rejection.
SSC JE Salary 2026
SSC JE posts are offered at Pay Level-6 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a basic pay scale of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 per month. The actual monthly salary depends on the basic pay and applicable allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Transport Allowance.
Since SSC JE is a Central Government post, the applicable allowances can vary based on the posting location and prevailing government rates. Therefore, the ₹35,400 figure is the starting basic pay, not the final in-hand salary.
Candidates can use the Central Government Salary Calculator to estimate the monthly salary after adding applicable allowances and deductions.
SSC JE Salary Structure
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Pay Level | Level-6 |
| 7th CPC Pay Scale | ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400 |
| Starting Basic Pay | ₹35,400 |
| DA | As applicable |
| HRA | As applicable |
| Transport Allowance | As applicable |
| In-Hand Salary | Depends on posting, allowances and deductions |
Note: The SSC JE 2026 notification specifies the Level-6 pay scale of ₹35,400–₹1,12,400. It does not specify a fixed in-hand salary, so any exact in-hand figure should be treated as an estimate rather than an official SSC figure.
BRO JE 2026: Physical & Medical Requirements
Candidates applying for BRO JE posts must meet separate Physical Efficiency, Physical and Medical Standards prescribed by SSC. Only male candidates are eligible for BRO JE posts. Candidates failing to meet these requirements after allocation may not be reallocated to another post.

What Candidates Should Check Before Applying
Before submitting the SSC JE 2026 application, candidates should verify these points against the specific post they intend to select:
- Educational qualification — a degree is not automatically accepted for every post, and a diploma is not automatically sufficient for every post.
- Experience — where required, it must be post-qualification experience.
- Age — calculate eligibility using August 1, 2026 as the crucial date.
- BRO requirements — candidates choosing BRO must satisfy its separate physical and medical standards.
- Engineering subject — select the subject corresponding to the qualifying education; SSC does not permit changing the selected stream later.
- Multiple-post eligibility — applying for more than one eligible post can require appearing in the respective papers.
- Documents — the qualification, experience and category claims made in the application must be supported during Document Verification.
- Vacancy figures — treat 1,748 as tentative until SSC publishes the detailed vacancy position.
SSC itself makes clear that application acceptance is provisional and that eligibility documents are scrutinised later by the concerned User Department.

Editorial Note
GovJobDeck’s vacancy position: We are using 1,748 because that is the figure currently stated by SSC in the 2026 examination notice. We have not inserted a Civil/Mechanical/Electrical or department-wise numerical breakup because SSC has not included that breakup in the notification and has said it will publish post-wise and category-wise figures separately.
This also means readers should distinguish the 2026 vacancy figure from vacancy tables belonging to earlier SSC JE examinations. Until SSC publishes the detailed 2026 vacancy document, those older figures should not be presented as the current recruitment breakup.
