The Defence Salary Calculator 2026 helps Armed Forces personnel estimate monthly salary using Basic Pay, Military Service Pay (MSP), Dearness Allowance (DA), HRA and other applicable allowances. The calculator is based on the 7th CPC Defence Pay Matrix and allows users to enter additional Defence allowances and deductions separately.
How the Defence Salary Calculator Works
The calculator starts with the Defence Pay Matrix level and Basic Pay entered by the user. It then adds applicable Military Service Pay (MSP), calculates DA on the Basic Pay plus MSP, and calculates HRA separately because MSP is not counted for HRA.
Users can also enter other applicable Defence allowances and monthly deductions to obtain an estimated gross salary and in-hand salary.
How Is Defence Salary Calculated?
Defence salary consists of Basic Pay and applicable salary components such as MSP, DA, HRA and other allowances.
A simplified calculation is:
Estimated Gross Salary = Basic Pay + MSP + DA + HRA + Other Applicable Allowances
Estimated In-Hand Salary = Estimated Gross Salary − Monthly Deductions
The exact salary depends on rank, pay level, service, posting, eligibility for specific allowances and individual deductions.
7th CPC Defence Pay Matrix
The 7th Central Pay Commission introduced a separate Pay Matrix for Defence personnel. The Government subsequently approved separate Pay Matrices for Defence personnel and Military Nursing Service.
The Defence Pay Matrix uses different levels to determine Basic Pay. Personnel move through the applicable stages of their Pay Matrix level based on increments, promotion and other applicable pay-fixation rules.
Defence Basic Pay and Pay Levels
Basic Pay is determined by the applicable Defence Pay Matrix level and stage. Different ranks and categories of Defence personnel are placed at different levels under the Armed Forces Pay Rules and applicable service regulations.
The calculator allows the user to enter the applicable Basic Pay directly rather than assuming a particular rank automatically.
Military Service Pay (MSP)
Military Service Pay (MSP) is a separate component of pay provided to eligible Defence personnel to compensate for the unique aspects and hardships associated with military service.
The 7th CPC recommended MSP of ₹15,500 per month for Service Officers, ₹10,800 for Nursing Officers, ₹5,200 for JCOs/ORs and ₹3,600 for Air Force Non-Combatants (Enrolled).
MSP is subject to the applicable eligibility and service conditions.
Defence Dearness Allowance (DA)
Dearness Allowance is linked to the Basic Pay structure and is revised by the Government from time to time.
For the calculation used on this page, users can enter the applicable DA rate. This makes the calculator easier to update when the Government announces a new DA rate.
The calculator treats MSP as part of the DA calculation base, consistent with the 7th CPC treatment of MSP.
House Rent Allowance (HRA) for Defence Personnel
HRA depends on the applicable rules, city classification and the employee’s entitlement to Government or service accommodation.
For Defence personnel, HRA arrangements are governed by applicable Defence/MoD orders and should not simply be assumed to be identical to civilian Central Government HRA.
In this calculator, HRA is calculated separately from MSP, and users can select the applicable city class and accommodation status.
Transport Allowance and Other Defence Allowances
Defence personnel may receive different allowances depending on rank, posting, operational conditions, qualification, duties and eligibility.
Examples can include field-area, risk and hardship, flying, sea-going, technical and other specialised allowances. These are not universal benefits for every member of the Armed Forces.
For this reason, the calculator provides an Other Defence Allowances field rather than automatically adding allowances that may not apply to a particular individual. The Government’s 7th CPC allowance framework specifically contains separate allowances for uniformed services based on their particular duties and conditions.
Army Salary Calculation
Indian Army salary depends on the applicable Defence Pay Matrix level, Basic Pay, MSP eligibility, DA, HRA and other allowances applicable to the soldier or officer.
The exact salary can vary significantly according to rank, service conditions and posting. Therefore, the calculator should be used with the employee’s actual Pay Matrix level and applicable allowances.
Navy Salary Calculation
Indian Navy personnel are paid under the Defence pay framework, with Basic Pay determined by the applicable Defence Pay Matrix level and additional allowances depending on service and posting conditions.
Sea-going and other specialised allowances may apply only where the required eligibility conditions are satisfied. The calculator therefore allows applicable additional allowances to be entered separately.
Air Force Salary Calculation
Indian Air Force personnel are paid under the applicable Defence Pay Matrix, with salary depending on Basic Pay, MSP where applicable, DA, HRA and other eligible allowances.
Air Force-specific allowances can depend on duties, qualifications, posting and service conditions, so they should be added only where applicable.
Defence Gross Salary vs In-Hand Salary
Gross salary is the total of applicable salary components before deductions.
In-hand salary is the amount remaining after deductions such as tax, NPS or other applicable recoveries.
Because deductions vary between personnel, this calculator allows the user to enter monthly deductions rather than assuming one fixed deduction amount.
How to Calculate Defence In-Hand Salary
First determine the applicable Basic Pay and MSP.
Then calculate DA and HRA and add any other allowances applicable to the individual.
The calculation is:
Estimated Gross Salary = Basic Pay + MSP + DA + HRA + Other Allowances
Then:
Estimated In-Hand Salary = Estimated Gross Salary − Monthly Deductions
The result should be treated as an estimate rather than an official payslip.
Defence Salary Calculation Example
Suppose a JCO/OR has:
Basic Pay: ₹21,700
MSP: ₹5,200
DA: 60%
HRA: 30%
Other Allowances: ₹0
Deductions: ₹0
The DA base becomes:
₹21,700 + ₹5,200 = ₹26,900
DA at 60% is:
₹26,900 × 60% = ₹16,140
HRA at 30% of Basic Pay is:
₹21,700 × 30% = ₹6,510
Estimated gross salary is therefore:
₹21,700 + ₹5,200 + ₹16,140 + ₹6,510 = ₹49,550
This example is an illustration using the selected assumptions. Actual salary depends on the individual’s applicable service conditions and allowances.
What Does the Defence Salary Calculator Calculate?
The calculator estimates:
Basic Pay
Military Service Pay (MSP)
Dearness Allowance (DA)
House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Other Defence Allowances
Estimated Gross Salary
Estimated Monthly Deductions
Estimated In-Hand Salary
It also displays the selected Pay Matrix level, MSP category, DA rate, HRA city class and HRA rate.
Why Can Defence Salary Differ Between Personnel?
Defence salary can differ because personnel may have different:
- Pay Matrix levels and stages
- Ranks and service categories
- MSP eligibility
- Posting locations
- Operational responsibilities
- Risk and hardship conditions
- Technical or specialised duties
- HRA eligibility
- Other allowances
- Tax and other deductions
The Government’s allowance framework includes different allowances for uniformed services based on functional requirements and service conditions.
Defence Salary Calculator Assumptions and Limitations
This calculator is based on the 7th CPC Defence Pay Matrix and MSP framework.
It is an independent estimation tool and is not an official Defence payroll system.
The calculator does not automatically include every Defence allowance because many allowances are conditional and depend on posting, duty, rank, service and eligibility.
The user should therefore enter only the allowances that actually apply to their individual service conditions.
The calculator also does not reproduce an individual’s official pay slip, tax calculation, NPS statement or service record.
Official Sources & Calculation Basis
The Defence salary calculation framework used on this page is based primarily on official Government sources.
The 7th Central Pay Commission report provides the Defence Pay Matrix and discusses Defence pay and allowances.
The Government’s implementation information confirms that separate Pay Matrices were approved for Defence personnel and Military Nursing Service.
The official Government information on MSP confirms the revised MSP rates for Service Officers, Nursing Officers, JCOs/ORs and Air Force Non-Combatants (Enrolled).
