Why This Recruitment is a Big Deal
Let us be honest. Getting a government job as a Medical Officer in Punjab is not easy. The competition is tough. Doctors from all over Punjab, and even from other states who have Punjab domicile, apply for these posts. But this time, the number of posts is 630. That is huge.
Here is why you should take this seriously:
- No Interview: The selection is purely based on a written exam. No panel will ask you tricky questions. No stress of facing 5 officers in a room. Just one written test.
- Good Salary: ₹53,100 is just the basic pay. With allowances like DA, HRA, and medical benefits, your total monthly take-home will be much higher.
- Job Security: Once selected, you are a permanent government employee. No private hospital can match this stability.
- Pension Benefits: Government medical officers get pension, gratuity, and other retirement benefits.
- Work-Life Balance: Unlike private hospitals where you work 12-14 hours, government hospitals have fixed duty hours.
If you are also exploring other graduate jobs or central government jobs, this Punjab state job is equally valuable.

Who Can Apply? – Eligibility in Plain Words
1. Educational Qualification
You must have:
- MBBS Degree from a university recognized by the Medical Council of India or National Medical Commission.
- Registration with the Punjab Medical Council OR any other duly constituted Medical Council in India. If you registered with Delhi Medical Council, Maharashtra Medical Council, or any other state council, that is fine too.
- Knowledge of Punjabi Language up to Matriculation standard (10th class) or its equivalent.
What if I do not know Punjabi? Do not panic. If you are selected but do not have Punjabi up to Matriculation level, you will get 6 months from the date of joining to acquire this qualification. The university or department will arrange classes or tests for you. But if you fail to pass within 6 months, your services will be terminated. So start learning Punjabi now if you do not know it.
Special Exemptions:
- War Heroes: If you are a war hero discharged from defence service or paramilitary forces due to disability, OR if you are the widow or dependent family member of such a war hero, you are exempt from the Punjabi language requirement.
- Wards of Defence Personnel: If you are a genuine resident of Punjab and your parent served in the defence forces, you get 2 years (instead of 6 months) to pass Punjabi equivalent to Matriculation standard or qualify a test conducted by the Language Wing of the Punjab Education Department.
2. Age Limit
- Minimum Age: 18 years
- Maximum Age: 37 years
- Age Calculation Date: 1 January 2026
This means your age on 1 January 2026 should be between 18 and 37 years.
3. Age Relaxation – Who Gets How Much?
Table
| Category | Relaxation | Upper Age Limit |
|---|---|---|
| SC / BC | 5 years | 42 years |
| Physically Handicapped | 10 years | 47 years |
| Punjab / Central / State Govt Employees | Up to 45 years | 45 years |
| Widows / Divorcees | Up to 40 years | 40 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Special Rule (see below) | Special Rule |
Ex-Servicemen Special Rule: This is important. For ex-servicemen, the age relaxation works differently. You can deduct the number of years you served in the Armed Forces from your actual age. Then check if the remaining age is within the maximum limit (37 years) plus 3 years. If yes, you are eligible.
Example: Suppose you are 42 years old and served 8 years in the army. Deduct 8 from 42 = 34. Since 34 is within 37 + 3 = 40, you are eligible. This is a huge advantage for ex-servicemen.
Application Fee – How Much to Pay?
Table
| Category | Total Fee | Breakdown |
|---|---|---|
| All Categories except SC | ₹2,360 | ₹2,000 (Fee) + ₹360 (GST @ 18%) |
| SC Category | ₹1,180 | ₹1,000 (Fee) + ₹180 (GST @ 18%) |
The fee is non-refundable. Even if you do not appear for the exam, you will not get the money back. So apply only if you are serious.
Payment Mode: Online only (Debit Card, Credit Card, Net Banking, UPI).
Salary and Benefits – What Will You Actually Get?
The official notification says the pay scale is Level 9 under the 7th Pay Commission, with an initial pay of ₹53,100.
But that is just the basic pay. Here is what your actual salary package looks like:
Table
| Component | Amount (Approximate) |
|---|---|
| Basic Pay | ₹53,100 |
| Dearness Allowance (DA) | ₹15,000 – ₹18,000 (varies with DA rate) |
| House Rent Allowance (HRA) | ₹4,000 – ₹8,000 (depends on city) |
| Medical Allowance | ₹1,000 – ₹2,000 |
| Transport Allowance | ₹3,000 – ₹4,000 |
| Total Gross Salary | ₹75,000 – ₹85,000 per month |
After deductions (PF, NPS, Income Tax if applicable), your in-hand salary will be approximately ₹65,000 – ₹75,000 per month.
Other Benefits:
- Government Quarters: Many health centres and hospitals provide accommodation.
- Free Medical Treatment: For you and your family in government hospitals.
- Pension: Under the National Pension System (NPS) or old pension scheme (if applicable).
- Gratuity: Lump sum amount at retirement.
- Leave: Earned leave, casual leave, medical leave, maternity/paternity leave.
- Loan Facilities: Easy loans from government banks.
- Job Security: Permanent government job. Cannot be removed without proper procedure.
This salary and benefits package is much better than most private hospital jobs in Punjab, especially for fresh MBBS graduates.
Selection Process – How Will You Get Selected?
There is only one stage — a Written Examination conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.
No Interview. No Group Discussion. No Viva.
Written Exam Pattern
The exact syllabus and pattern will be released by the university on its website. But based on previous medical officer recruitments in Punjab, the exam usually covers:
- General Knowledge & Current Affairs (Punjab and India)
- General English
- Medical Subjects (Clinical, Preventive, and Social Medicine)
- Punjabi Language (Basic level)
Minimum Qualifying Marks
- You must score at least 33% marks in the written test to be declared eligible.
- If you score less than 33%, you are out. No matter which category you belong to.
- There is no separate cutoff for each section. Only overall 33% is required.
Tie-Breaking Rule
If two or more candidates get the same marks, the preference order is as per Punjab Personnel Department letter no. PERS-PP-108/9/2025-3PP1-210 dated 26 June 2026. Usually, the tie is broken by:
- Age (older candidate gets preference)
- Academic marks in MBBS
- Alphabetical order of names
But wait for the official detailed notification for exact tie-breaking rules.
No Extra Weightage
If you have higher qualifications like MD, MS, DNB, or diploma, you will NOT get any extra marks. The exam is the same for everyone. Only your written test score matters.
What Happens After You Pass the Written Exam?
Passing the exam does not mean you will get the job immediately. Here is what happens next:
- Merit List: The university will publish a merit list based on your written exam marks and reservation rules.
- Document Verification: You will be called for document verification. Bring original certificates.
- Police Verification: You must submit a Police Verification certificate. If you have any criminal case pending against you in any court, you must get clearance.
- Medical Fitness Test: A basic medical fitness test to ensure you are physically fit for the job.
- Appointment Letter: If everything is clear, you get your appointment letter.
Important: If at any stage your certificate is found fake, bogus, or incorrect, your candidature will be cancelled immediately. Legal action may also be taken against you.

Do not start filling the form until you have all these documents scanned and ready:

Step 5: Register yourself first. You will need:
- Your full name (as per MBBS degree)

- Date of birth
- Mobile number
- Email ID
Step 6: After registration, you will get a login ID and password. Save them in your phone and write them in a notebook.

Pro Tip: Fill the form in the morning or afternoon. Government websites are slow in the evening. Also, do not wait for 4 or 5 August. Apply by 25-28 July to be safe.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Every year, hundreds of candidates make silly mistakes and lose their chance. Do not be one of them.
Mistake 1: Wrong Category Selection You select “General” but you actually belong to SC. Or you select “EWS” but your certificate is expired. Once submitted, the category cannot be changed. You will lose reservation benefits.
Mistake 2: Fake Certificates Some candidates use fake caste certificates or fake sports certificates. The Punjab government now has strict verification systems. If caught, you will be banned from all future government jobs. It is not worth it.
Mistake 3: Wrong Photo or Signature Uploading a selfie instead of a passport photo. Or uploading a signature in blue ink when black ink is required. Read the instructions carefully.
Mistake 4: Waiting for the Last Day On 4-5 August, thousands of candidates will try to apply together. The website will crash. You will panic. Apply early.
Mistake 5: Not Checking Email After applying, the university may send important updates to your email. Check your inbox and spam folder daily.
Mistake 6: Ignoring the Punjabi Requirement If you do not know Punjabi, start learning now. Do not think you will manage later. 6 months pass quickly.
